Are you a Dr. Seuss fan? It’s hard to imagine that anyone isn’t; seems like just about everyone grew up reading Dr. Seuss books. Today, long after that first book was written, the children’s section at nearly every library and bookstore is sure to carry Dr. Seuss. Do you have a favorite?
Like most children, I remember reading the popular Green Eggs and Ham, and The Cat and the Hat; but my favorite is actually one of the lesser known Dr. Seuss books. It’s called Are You My Mother? Do you know this one?
Are You My Mother holds a very special place in my heart. My Mom tells me that I begged to have it read to me over and over each night, so much so that I actually memorized the words. I could read the book before I could read the words themselves. A bit of nostalgia I guess, for simpler times; for lying in my Strawberry Shortcake bed each night as my Mom and Dad read to me, and for when my most concerning thought was how many times Mom and Dad were going to read me my story.
As scrappers, we know that preserving those special nostalgic memories are a gift to our children, a gift that as adults they will look back on with fondness, just like I do when I think of Dr. Seuss’ Are You My Mother? This back to school season, as reading again becomes routine, consider scrapping a layout or two with the familiar and colorful rhymes of Dr. Seuss.
