I can still hear my mum calling us in from play on a warm summer evening. She had special names for all of us because, she’d say, we were ‘special’ but we knew it was because she was always getting mixed up with our real names. I was always BooBoo after Yogi Bears little friend. My youngest sister, and the one usually always up to mischief, was called Goosy Gander. Mum said it was because she always dreaded having to see what mess April was in so to ease her mind she’s say ‘Let’s take a goosy gander (slang for ‘take a look’) at the mess you’re in’.
