Hi, here is Silke.

Today we will create a Falling Snow effect added to your Photo using the scatter brush.

First, I will show you how to create a simple snow scatter brush. Then we will use this scatter brush to add the snow effect.

Here I have two papers and a photo. I want to add the snow effect to this picture using a layer above this photo. See my project here:

Creating the Scatter Brush with Snow Effect:

1- Create a new document in Photoshop, sized to 300 x 300px with transparent background. Set foreground color to black.
Use a round dot brush, sized to 250, 90% hardness and make a round dot in this layer.

This step is optional: I like to add a ripple effect to this round dot in order to achieve irregular borders for the snow.
Go to Filter > Distort > Ripple –> Amount 106 Size: Medium

Then we have to set this snow ball as our brush. Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset.

Adding Snow to your layout / picture

Create a new page (3600 x 3600), add two background papers like I did below and then add your photo above this two layers. Create a new blank layer on top of all.

Now we have to set up our snow brush to make a scatter brush from it.
Click on our recently created brush and resize it to 78px. Set the opacity to 80%. (correction: I rather prefer 90%)!

Toggle the Brush Settings Palette on, in order to view the bush proprieties.

On this Brush Settings Panel we need to set up 3 items:
1) Brush Tip Shape: Hardness 90% and 500% spacing.

2) Shape Dynamics – Size Jitter 80% and Minimum Diameter =0

3) Scattering – Scatter Both Axes – 500%. Count 2 (I rather prefer 1) and Count Jitter =30%. Play with these settings to see what you prefer.

Now, that your settings are like the images above, set the foreground color to WHITE and then paint with this scatter brush all over your image and repeat it, until you are happy.

Save your brush: hit on the brush icon in the proprieties bar, then choose New Brush Preset and name the brush “Snow Brush”.

Let me know if you have questions!
