As I mentioned a while back, my family and I are moving (t-minus 8 days….). Moving means going through everything you own as you pack (or donate) it all. One of the things I came across as I was packing was my wedding dress. I’m a little embarrassed to say that it’s been sitting in it’s bag, still dirty from my wedding day, since I hung it up almost 8 years ago. Yesterday, I came across it in the closet. I couldn’t resist, I had to try it on….
and it fit! Well, mostly….it didn’t quite zip all the way and 3 kids later my bust line isn’t quite what it used to be – but it still fit! It was amazing to me how beautiful it still made me feel. I was dirty, sweaty and gross from a day of hard work – but this white dress? It took all that away.
As I began to unzip myself, my youngest (age 3) came over to me, “pretty mommy,” he said as he grabbed my hand and started walking. As silly as I felt, outside on a Tuesday afternoon in my dirty old wedding dress, his little fingers and proud smile took all of the embarrassment way. Together we walked the 1/2 block to our mailbox and got the mail. I got a few funny looks, and several smiles from the neighbors – and I just had fun with it. Pretty Mommy.
These past few weeks I’ve felt far from pretty. My time has been consumed by the packing and cleaning and preparations for this move. It’s far easier to sit on the phone with utility companies in my pajamas than to get dressed, showers are for the days when I am not so exhausted that I can muster up the energy to climb in and I’m pretty sure I packed all of my makeup. But the look on my 3 year old’s face when he saw me in my wedding dress, that will make me feel beautiful for a long time. (I also texted a picture to my hubsand who responded right away with “You look beautiful!” That will also stick with me, because sometimes a girl just needs to hear she’s pretty!
So, since I’m sharing, I invite you to as well. I would love to see a picture of you in your wedding dress. From today or from your wedding! Link me up in the comments!

Manda – I have to admit that my dress is on a hanger in a plastic bag but also has not been cleaned after that day (and it has been a much longer time than 8 years).
Wow what a wonderful memory that will be .. and a great pic for his 21st!! My wedding dress was cleaned, and it is wrapped in blue tissue paper in a plastic box in our storeroom; where it has been for the last 30 years 🙂 I keep trying to give it to charity, as we do not have an abundance of storage space .. every time I put it on the pile to go, my husband spots it and puts it back in the storeroom, lol. I have to laugh, because it certainly will not come anywhere close to fitting me anymore; and we have no children or relatives to pass it on to; but obviously he is extremely attached to it!! Who could not love a man like that ??? We have had some rough times, we have hurt and disappointed each other; but neither one of us has ever considered giving up on each other. Although, one day when we were having a discussion about the standard of work he had carried out on painting some lattice work, I did turn around 3 times and say “i divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you” which is how some Arab countries handle divorce. We are not of Arab descent, so I figured it didn’t count, lol !! I would put that photo in a frame and proudly display it forever and a day, if I had a son who told me I was pretty and wanted to walk me “down the aisle” 🙂 You are very blessed. Thanks for sharing the story and the pic! It has certainly warmed my heart. Please give your son a big hug from me .. he will be a “keeper” for some lucky girl in the future!
Yes you are still beautiful and your little man has a good eye for the ladies. Keep an eye on him. Mine was in 1962 and yes the dress is still here as are the Navy uniforms that also can’t get into. but we have the pictures so all is good even though we are no longer a couple. Mine can be seen on my blog somewhere in the last few months. http://grandmasarge74.blogspot.com/ I’m coming up on my 77th birthday but I love that dress.
What a great memory to have. I still have mine- and its most likely still dirty but after 48 years, I”m not worrying. I don’t think it will ever fit anyone in my family. I had two boys, One is still unmarried at 43 and the other has a daughter, age 5, who is 4’2″ tall. I was only 5’2″ when I got married, and a size 3. Ihaven’t been a size 3 since 1968! lol. But I could dream. Granddaughter may never be a size three. At 5, she wears a size 10-12. Her feet are as long as mine, but thinner. Gotta love tall people. I am the only one under 6′ in the whole family. I got short changed.
