Last weekend our new friends, new to Germany friends, had a birthday party for their 8-year-old, Addison. Their 8-year-old who just started German school last month. Read: not much German spoken yet.
However, she is the type to jump in with both feet, no holds barred. I love her! She invited most of his class to the party, and Dane. By the time we got there her eyes were big and utter chaos had broken out in her basement. The kids were having a great, albeit extremely loud, time! Luckily I not only speak German, I have lots of practices with rooms full of boys.
I quickly rounded up all the young Jedi’s, and their light sabers, and hustled them outside to work up an appetite. Girl had been busy on pinterest! Not only were there Han-Solo-trapped-in-carbonite (jello) treats, but tie fighter cheese snacks & marshmallow treats & popcorn & pizza & Death Star piñata & Star Wars apple juice, but there was a Death Star cake too! We needed to run the kids ragged.
The kids ran & played & slugged each other with pool noodle/light sabers. They played until laughing turned into crying. It turns out getting whacked with a pool noodle is only fun the first few hundred times. Who knew? It also turns out my knowledge of kid games has faded these last couple of years. After teaching them several songs, but not remembering the game to go with them, I finally settled on Duck, Duck, Goose.
Dane & Addison demonstrated how to play and we all practiced saying Duck, Duck, Goose. And then? Then the game was on! They embraced it wholeheartedly, happily going around & around & around & around the circle:
“Duck. Duck. Duck. Duck. Duck. Duck.” and then some more “Duck. Duck. Duck. Duck. Duck. Duck.” Until finally yelling something vaguely resembling Goose, at least in that the “ooo” sound came through, and running like mad to claim their seat. There was much laughing and fun had by all.
And as I relaxed, and watched them play, language issues dissolving, I slowly realized what they were saying. It was not Duck, Duck. Goose!
It was Duck. Duck. Busen! Or, Duck. Duck. Boobs!
Looks like an AWESOME birthday party!
