As a child growing up in New Guinea I loved New Year, it was a time full of joy, noise, the smell of crackers and Dragons, everything a kid would love. I can close my eyes even after all these years and I can still hear the crackers going off, the beat of the drums coming from the drum truck that followed the dragon as he moved to every Chinese house and Business in town, to dance under the huge string of crackers as they were going off and to climb to the top to recover the money donation that was there, the more money the more you would prosper in the following year.

We would go to all our Chinese friends’ homes for drinks and beautiful food while waiting for the Dragon to arrive and then we would move on to the next. We had a house across the road from ours and when I was little that was when the day ended, but once we were teenagers the fun was even better. Dress in jeans and a long sleeve shirt and we could dance under the dragon too. We wou ld start at Midnight at the KMT, with the waking of the Dragons, those drums would beat and ever so slowly the Dragons would start to move, eventually standing fully upright, they would start their dance and move off to the first house just as the sun was rising and we would follow and keep following until sometime very late the next night when all the houses and businesses in town had been visited. New year since we left our wonderful has never been the same.
